There are many reasons to train outside of the marathon, half-marathon, and common short distances. For experienced runners, you may be looking ahead to Triathlons and Ultramarathons. Others may be interested in Base Training, Fitness Walking, or continuing to meet your training goals when rough weather strikes. In the 10K Novice plan, you run three days of the week: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Cross-Training: On the schedule, this is identified simply as “cross.”. Wednesdays and Saturdays are cross-training days: swimming, cycling, walking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or other forms of aerobic training. Post Marathon Recovery. In the chapter titled “Mile 27” in his best-selling book, Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide, Hal Higdon explains what runners should do immediately after crossing the finish line: That 27th mile is particularly important when it comes to speeding postmarathon recovery so that you can run and race again. Before embracing Novice 2, you should have been running about a year. You should be able to comfortably run distances between 3 and 6 miles. You should be training 3-5 days a week, averaging 15-25 miles a week. You should have run an occasional 5-K or half marathon race. The higher your fitness level, the easier this 18-week program will be.
